Because police officers are tasked with enforcing the law, they are often held to a higher standard than the typical citizen. Often, when an officer in California is suspected of committing a crime, he or she may face additional scrutiny as the police force that employed him or her attempts to quickly distance itself. Unfortunately, an officer in California now faces multiple criminal charges, including vehicular manslaughter, following a fatal crash.
Police reports accuse the 26-year-old man, who was off-duty at the time of the crash, of speeding just prior to the accident that happened one night in late September. According to reports, his vehicle allegedly struck the rear of two others on a California freeway. One of the vehicles reportedly caught fire after the collision, trapping its three occupants.
All three people inside that vehicle were pronounced dead once with the fire department arrived. While officials did not initially release the identity of the deceased victims, family members confirmed that two parents and their teenage son were killed. The other drivers involved in the collision reportedly suffered only minor injuries.
The police officer, who is said to have spent four years in the U.S. Army, now faces criminal charges as a result of the crash. In addition to vehicular manslaughter, he is suspected of felony DUI. The police chief has already spoken out strongly against the officer. To help ensure that he is fully prepared to respond to the serious charges against him, the California man will likely rely upon the advice and support of an experienced criminal defense attorney.
