There are many challenges that face drivers in California. Under certain conditions — such as at night — reduced visibility can make it even more difficult to safely maneuver roadways. This, in combination with pedestrians on or near a road, can have disastrous consequences for even the safest of drivers. Unfortunately, a man has been charged with vehicular manslaughter following an accident that left a teen dead.

The accident happened just after 9 p.m. on a day in January. According to reports, a sports utility vehicle driven by a 33-year-old man collided with a teenager. The teenager’s position in the roadway at the time of the collision is unclear.

Police claim that the driver of the SUV drove away from the scene. While he was away, witnesses administered CPR, but the young victim passed away. The driver is said to have ultimately returned to the scene where police officers claim to have determined that he was under the influence of alcohol.

The California man faces multiple charges as a result of the arrest, including vehicular manslaughter, hit and run resulting in death, DUI causing great bodily harm and having three or more DUI convictions in seven years. Unfortunately, when a person makes a mistake in the past, it is easy to assume that they will repeat those mistakes. However, in order for the man to be convicted, prosecutors must be able to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. An experienced criminal defense attorney can help him examine his options and create the most appropriate response to the criminal charges against him.
