Anyone who has driven with several people in the car knows of the inherent distractions that this could cause. It could easily result in failing to see a traffic signal in time. However, police in California believe that a recent fatal crash was caused by a woman who was driving under the influence at the time, resulting in suspicions of vehicular manslaughter.
The incident reportedly happened at approximately 8 p.m. According to police, a 41-year-old driver entered an intersection on a red light. As a result, police say, the vehicle she was driving was struck by a pickup truck. While one of the sedan’s occupants was able to exit the vehicle, three were trapped inside. One of those, a 24-year-old man, is said to have died in the crash.
The driver of truck did not suffer injuries while the driver of the sedan was transported to the hospital. The extent of her injuries is unclear. However, because police suspect she was driving under the influence, she is expected to be booked on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury.
An unexpected death such as is said to have occurred in this accident is always a tragic one. While police and members of the community may want someone to hold accountable, the sad fact is that accidents can happen for simple reasons. It is unclear what led police to suspect that the driver was under the influence or what evidence supports their suspicions. Because of the serious consequences of a conviction for vehicular manslaughter, the woman may choose to seek help from an experienced criminal defense attorney in California.
