As any driver knows, a car accident can happen at any moment, for a variety of different reasons. However, it might be easy for police to automatically suspect that alcohol was a factor in an accident that occurs at certain times, such as during the early morning hours. Unfortunately, two friends are now facing accusations of drunk driving in California after a recent crash.
The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. on a day in October. According to reports, the two men, ages 23 and 24, were driving separate vehicles as they headed north on a California road, with one following the other. The older male reportedly lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a sound wall while the other man struck the curb before coming to a stop in the yard of a residence.
Because police ran four names as part of the investigation, reports speculate that there were also passengers involved. However, no injuries were reported. The two men were taken into custody, suspected of driving under the influence. It unclear what led police to suspect that the men were under the influence of the time of the accident, what their blood alcohol content was or how it was determined.
Despite the assumptions that police might make regarding drunk driving, there must be sufficient evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Until — and unless — that standard is met, the California men are presumed innocent. Unfortunately, criminal charges can ultimately have a significant impact on person’s life, making it necessary for defendants to fully understand the charges against them and their legal options. An attorney with experience with such cases can help guide them throughout the process.
