Over the course of the last year, a great deal of attention has been placed on opioid addiction, such as to Oxycodone. As such, law enforcement officials in California and across the country may be eager to show that they are being tough on those who they say are involved in illegal drug activity. In fact, a doctor now faces drug charges.
The man’s arrest follows an investigation by the FBI, Drug Enforcement Agency, California Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The defendant’s speciality is pain management. However, police say that the doctor was distributing Tramadol, fentanyl and Oxycodone as a doctor but outside of his practice. The drugs were given even though officials claim that there was no medical necessity.
The allegedly illegal distributions are said to have happened from June 2017 to July 2018, spanning 13 months. It is unclear what prompted the investigation against the man. In addition to the drug charges, the 71-year-old man faces two counts of health care fraud as a result of allegations that he submitted two claims that were fraudulent.
As a result of the drug charges — including unlawful distribution of painkillers — the man could face a significant amount of time behind bars in addition to having to pay a high fine. Because of the high stakes associated with a conviction of such charges, many people who face them in California often want an experienced criminal defense attorney on their side. Having such a professional often provides defendants confidence in the decisions that they must make.
